What are the recommended system requirements for ClustrixDB?

Here are the recommended system specs to run ClustrixDB.

  • Minimum of 3 servers required for a ClustrixDB cluster
  • Operating System:  RHEL or CentOS 6.x

We recommend either 8-core or 16-core servers. If using 16-core servers, the remaining specs below stay the same.

General ClustrixDB Server Recommendations:
  • CPUs:
    • 2x 8-core CPUs 2.0GHz or higher (the higher the better)
  • RAM:
    • 64GB or more (typically not more than 256GB)
  • Disks:
    • 4x SATA SSD 400GB or more
    • 2x SATA HDD 1TB or higher
  • Hardware RAID:
    • 4x SSDs as RAID-0
    • 2x HDDs as RAID-1
  • Network:
    • 1x 1 Gigabit interfaces
    • 1x 10GbE interfaces

Private Network:

  • 1x 10-Gigabit Ethernet switch with enough ports to connect each ClustrixDB server

High Availability Server Recommendations:

Same as above, with following upgrades:

  • Network:
    • 2x 1 Gigabit interfaces
    • 2x 10GbE interfaces
  • Power Supply Unit:
    • 2x power supply units (redundant)

Private Network:

  • 2x 10-Gigabit Ethernet switch with enough ports to connect each ClustrixDB server

Other Recommendations:

Hyperthreading:  Most DB workloads do not benefit from Hyperthreading, therefore Clustrix, Inc recommends as general guidance disabling Hyperthreading in the ClustrixDB server’s BIOS settings.
 
SSD Quality:  Unfortunately, solid state drives (SSDs) are available in various levels of quality.  Clustrix, Inc recommends using SSDs that have the following characteristics:
  • Enterprise-class SSDs (not consumer-class available from Amazon.com)
  • Contains a “Power Loss Protection” feature
  • Recommend using SSDs manufactured by Intel (every Intel SSD we’ve seen has Power Loss Protection)

Amazon AWS: When running in AWS we strongly recommend using enhanced networking as it has shown a measurable performance impact.

  • Other Notes:
    • No Operating System
    • Unconfigured RAID for H330/H730/H730P (1-24 HDDs or SSDs)
